One of our favorite traditions is our Thanksgiving lunch. It is always so great getting so many people together to share a meal with. Thank you to all of the parents and family members that were able to come join us for lunch today. We are especially grateful for our kitchen staff who cooked hundreds of meals today.
This year we will document our learning in first grade through this blog. Student work and activities will be on display.

Mannequin Challenge
There is a new rave of people having a Mannequin Challenge. I told the class about it and they all wanted to do it. Here is take #3 after we had a fire drill. I think they did pretty good for being in first grade. We paused our math stations and here is our end result.

Election Day
Since our country was having elections, we decided that we would have one of our own. Each group chose one member who would run for Grand Marshal. This job is one that has a lot of responsibility. They are in charge of greeting a guest to our classroom and explain what we are learning. The 5 candidates wrote a speech and their group members created an election poster in support of their team member. Each student gave their speech and we set up a "voting booth" with a ballot. Afterwards, students received and "I voted for Grand Marshal" sticker.
Congrats to our new Grand Marshal!

Recess
Today the kids were not able to play on the muddy grass. They decided to have a boys vs girls basketball game. It was short lived since there were so many players, but it was fun to watch students become leader and pump up their team.

Math: Comparing Numbers
Students worked in partners to build numbers to 120 with base ten blocks. They then compared the two numbers and used the symbols (<, >, and =) along with the comparative language (less than, greater than, and equal to).

Science: Heat Energy Experiment with Popcorn
We are learning about different types of energy. Today we focused on heat energy and watched heat change the kernels into popcorn. The kids LOVED this! It was so fun to watch their expressions while it was popping. Their excitement was contagious.
